Words to the Wise

Three guidelines to obtaining satisfaction and value from your photo project.

Consider in advance what you want.  In addition to the size and number of prints, have you considered whether the new photo have a matte or glossy finish? To displayed in an album, table frame, or on a wall? Custom frame or ready made? Think of the wall space or table top you have in mind and what size frames will best fit the space.

Shop carefully for your restoration service. For most firms, photo retouch and restoration is a sideline, while others outsource the work. Will the person you are talking with also be doing the actual work? Will your original photo be shipped to a lab? Be prepared to ask pertinent questions. Is the original photo sharp enough to enlarge? Will the new prints last? How much of the damage is restorable? Can colors and contrast be retrieved? What will it look like in black and white or sepia? What will be gained or lost if cropping at 8X10, 5X7, or 4X6 inches. Can other photos be used to substitute missing facial features, hand, etc? Does the price include your digital negatives on a CD?
